Updated national guidance regarding COVID-19

 

Coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms can include:

> a high temperature or shivering (chills) – a high temperature    

means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not

need to measure your temperature)

> a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for

more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours

> a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

> shortness of breath

> feeling tired or exhausted

> an aching body

> a headache

> a sore throat

> a blocked or runny nose

> loss of appetite

> diarrhoea

> feeling sick or being sick

 

The symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses,

such as colds and flu.

 

Children and young people with mild symptoms such as a

runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough, who are otherwise well,

can continue to attend their education setting.

All children and young people with respiratory symptoms

should be encouraged to cover their mouth and nose with a

disposable tissue when coughing and/or sneezing and to wash

their hands after using or disposing of tissues.

 

What to do if you have symptoms

Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if

you have symptoms of COVID-19 and either:

  • you have a high temperature
  • you do not feel well enough to go to work, school or carry
  • out your normal activities

Take extra care to avoid close contact with anyone 

who is at higher risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19.

You can go back to school or your normal activities when you

feel better or do not have a high temperature.

 

What to do if you have a positive COVID-19 test result

 

Children and young people aged 18 years and under who

have a positive test result

It is not recommended that children and young people are

tested for COVID-19 unless directed to by a health professional.

If a child or young person has a positive COVID-19 test result

they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other

people for 3 days after the day they took the test, if they can.

After 3 days, if they feel well and do not have a high

temperature, the risk of passing the infection on to others is

much lower. This is because children and young people tend

to be infectious to other people for less time than adults.

Children and young people who usually go to school, college

or childcare and who live with someone who has a positive

COVID-19 test result should continue to attend as normal.

 

Advice for adults who have a positive test result

If you have a positive COVID-19 test result, it is very likely that you

have COVID-19 even if you do not have any symptoms. You can

pass on the infection to others, even if you have no symptoms.

Many people with COVID-19 will no longer be infectious to others

after 5 days. If you have a positive COVID-19 test result, try to

stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days after

the day you took your test.

Although many people will no longer be infectious to others after

5 days, some people may be infectious to other people for up to

10 days from the start of their infection. You should avoid meeting

people at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell from COVID-19,

especially 

those whose immune system means that they are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19,

despite vaccination, for 10 days after the day you took your test.

The school has also been informed by the Department of

Education that it is no longer allowed to distribute self-test

kits unless advised by a local health protection team, local

authority or director of public health. 

 

The main aim of the Orchard School is to provide a happy, secure environment for its pupils. It is hoped that all children irrespective of mental or physical ability, race or gender, will achieve the best results of which they are capable and that they will respect their fellow pupils and all staff at the school.

The school actively supports the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Orchard School is a co-educational day school for pupils from 5 to 16 years of age, has been at its present premises at South Leverton since January 1992. Set in 24 acres of beautiful landscaped parkland, the school has since been substantially improved and enlarged with Science and Art blocks, a multi-purpose Hall, Language and CDT rooms and a Drama Studio.

The Nursery Department continues to operate from the former premises at Holly Road, Retford and caters for children aged 2 to 5. The Reception class for the upper school is based at the Nursery.

 

In its happy, family atmosphere, where discipline is firm but fair, the best in each child is brought out. Classes are deliberately kept small so that help can be given to all children to develop to their full potential. While attention is given to the need for educating children in accordance with modern practice, the school still uses the best of proven traditional methods of teaching.

The school has always given a high priority to basic literacy and numeracy and has a recognised reputation in these areas. All this is achieved by a loyal and enthusiastic staff of well qualified and experienced teachers, paying attention to the individual needs of each pupil. Progress is constantly monitored and communicated to parents, and there are termly report sheets and annual full written reports.

The school recognises the differing parental circumstances and varying needs of its pupils and is therefore very flexible about admission ages. Some parents may choose to have their children educated at the Orchard School from Nursery through to the age of 16. Others may wish them to gain the firm foundations here to prepare them for success in the 11 Plus Examination with the view to moving on to a Grammar School. Yet other children may join at the age of 11 or 13 years from either the State or the independent sector.

Additionally to the timetabled subjects, pupils are given the opportunity to study musical instruments including the keyboard, flute, clarinet, guitar, saxophone and drums.

Great emphasis is also placed on the personal and social development of each child, resulting in young people who are self-confident, articulate, well mannered, and responsible members of society. Community involvement has included the raising of funds to support local and national charities e.g. Macmillan Nurses, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Samaritan's Purse, Water Aid and Children in Need to mention just a few. 

The educational partnership between the school and the parents of its pupils is viewed as being of immense importance. Parents are always welcomed into the classrooms to view progress or to talk to staff about any problems.
